The History of Early Virginia
HIS 328 traces over three centuries of cultural transformation
in Virginia. The first third of the course takes us from the Amerindian
world, through Jamestown and the early company fiasco, into the
seventeenth century colonial society of William Berkeley and Nathaniel
Bacon. From the colonial world, we move, in the second part of the
course, to consider the American Revolution and Virginia's leading
role in the formation of the United States. Finally, in the last
section of the course, we examine Virginia's ante-bellum slave culture
and its role in the coming of the Civil War. Throughout the course,
class members will be encouraged to explore new modes of historical
scholarship, from archaeology and ethnohistory to anthropology and
public history.
